Most of the guitarists I know own a Line 6 POD, a little device that looks like a large red lima bean with knobs and buttons on the top. When I first heard of the Line 6 Bass POD Pro, I was curious, as my guitarist friends considered their guitar POD to be indispensable.

I had the opportunity to try one of these out, and right away I knew I wanted to buy one, and soon did. One of the first things you can do is play with the various effects it gives you, like having a bunch of foot pedals linked together. For live sound, you can use its various built-in effects or simulate a cabinet and feed your signal directly to the PA, but I normally just run through my bass cabinet for shows, because for smaller shows, the PA might not have enough low end, and your signal is blended with the rest of the band, so the shaping of sound the POD can do is largely lost when it gets mixed in with everything else the PA is doing. Besides, it looks weird to not have an amp and speaker cabinet near the bass player.

Where this unit really shines, however, is in the recording studio. Many bands will go into the studio, set the drummer up in a large room with lots of mics, and get good drum tracks laid down, while the guitarists, keyboardists, vocalists, bassist, and so forth sit in the control room and play along on "scratch" tracks. The band then goes back and re-dubs the other instruments onto real tracks, one instrument at a time.

Ordinarily, you'd either plug the bass directly into the input on the mixing board, or, less commonly, set up your bass amp in a recording room and mic it, and feed that signal into the mixing board. Most bands spend a lot of time getting a good sound out of what comes out of the mixing board, by tweaking the mic, tweaking the EQ on the input channel, and so forth.

With the POD, you can plug your bass into the mixing board, set the EQ flat, and record your track. Then, when you go to mix down, you can run your bass track through the POD and make it sound like you're using any one of a ton of amp/cabinet combinations. This lets you experiment - "what would it sound like through a 4x10 cab instead of a 1x15?", "how would it sound if I used a tube head instead of solid state for the bass solo?" and so forth - things you could only do by setting up another set of real equipment and re-recording the track if you didn't have the POD.

You can also apply various effects, such as reverb, flanger, distortion, etc. If you're using a recording environment that lets you apply a filter to a track by running through a piece of external equipment (such as how they often add reverb to vocal tracks), then the POD gives you virtually unlimited control over how your bass track sounds in the finish product.

I rate this 4 of 5 stars for a few reasons. First, the S/PDIF sound quality leaves a little to be desired. There's no sense having such killer effects and emulations, then muddying them with a less than perfect A/D converter. I'd use an external A/D if you want a digital signal.

Second, the unit is not very deep. This makes it impossible to stack anything on top of it, and if it is mounted in a rack, it makes it so you have to use a flashlight and reach into the depths of your rack case to plug wires into the back. It's nice that they can package it so tightly, but they could easily just extend the chassis back a bit to make the jacks easier to access.

Overall, this is a solid piece of equipment, both in terms of features and reliability.

The power of Bass PODXT is now at your feet! Included are over 50 stompbox, synth, and studio effects, 28 bass amp models, plus 22 cab and 4 mic models. With its rugged steel construction, Bass PODXT Live™ is ready to take years of real world gig abuse. Whether you use it as the ultimate multi-effect pedal, a direct recording miracle, a powerhouse preamp, a practice partner, or a creative digital signal processing tool, we think you'll agree that Bass PODXT Live is about the most amazing thing to happen to the electric bass since, well, since the bass amplifier itself!
Bass PODXT Live delivers the incredible tones of the acclaimed Line 6 Point-to-Point Interactive modeling technology (as featured in our other POD® XT products and Vetta™ II series guitar amps), fuses it with the wonderfully portable and easy to use POD® which has been the bass recording world standard for years, and smacks it all down on the floor for rugged professional use. So you've got the tonal heritage of the past century of stompbox and bass amplifier design, plus no-compromise recording and direct sound excellence — all ready to roll when you are.
Effects
What bassist doesn’t like effects? Bass PODXT Live’s got a bunch of great Stomp, Mod and Delay/Verb effects sounds adapted from Line 6’s DM4™ Distortion Modeler, MM4™ Modulation Modeler, and DL4™ Delay Modeler pedals. And, there are some brand spankin’ new models that come straight from our flagship combo, Vetta™ II.
But what fun are a bunch of effects if you can’t wire them up in bizarre and unusual ways? Fortunately, with Bass POD® XT Live, you can. Its flexible routing lets you mix and match up to 6 marvelous effects simultaneously. When using an amp model, you can even choose to put some PRE, and some POST. Who says you can get too much of a good thing?
Here’s a simple effects setup where both the MOD and DELAY effects are running PRE:

But perhaps you'd prefer a studio-style routing, with the MOD effect PRE and the DELAY running POST.

This is what the full signal flow looks like inside Bass POD XT Live, including the pre and post options for Mod, Delay/Reverb and the Volume pedal:

Chromatic Tuner and Tap Tempo Effects
Tap (Hold/Tuner) - Bass PODXT Live lets you control the time and speed of your effects by simply tapping on this button. To use the TAP control, just tap the button at the tempo you want and the effects will change to match what you tapped.
But wait, that’s not all. Hold the footswitch for about 2 seconds and… bling, bling: instant digital chromatic tuner! Play a note and Bass PODXT Live will show you what it is - and whether it's in tune - on that handy display.
Amplifier Models Bass POD XT Live has an incredible collection of amp and cab models that have been used on countless hit recordings. Based on the most prized amplifiers in the history of bass, Bass PODXT Live features 28 amp models and 22 cab models that will take you everywhere from classic and boutique, to modern and beyond.
Bass PODXT Live also has our A.I.R. II cabinet/microphone modeling, which allows you to choose from 4 mic models, along with the ability to adjust the amount of room you hear. Bass PODXT Live's ability to mix and match speaker cabinets and mics will help you find exactly the vibe that you're looking for.
Ins and Outs
Bass POD® XT Live has a simple, gig-ready setup that’s adaptable to all your different stage and studio needs. Whether you’re running it as a multi-effect pedal in front of a bass amp (or into its FX loop), or straight to the house PA, Bass PODXT Live is the best way to take total control of your sound at the gig.
USB - Bass PODXT Live’s USB jack lets you connect to most computers and record Bass PODXT Live directly to a wide variety of popular digital recording software packages. We’ve even included a USB cable to get you started. You can get the required driver software — and easily get it installed along with any other Bass PODXT Live -related computer stuff — by using the free Line 6 Monkey software, which you can download at www.line6.com/monkey.
Variax Digital Input - Connect a Line 6 Variax® Bass here, and experience a whole new world of possibility and sound-control power. In addition to a direct digital audio connection between the bass and Bass PODXT Live, you can have the Variax change sounds each time you choose a new Channel Memory from Bass PODXT Live’s footswitches or SELECT knob. And, you can even tweak the sound of your Variax Bass tone with Bass PODXT Live’s built-in pedal! Learn more about Variax Bass 700 here!
MIDI In & Out - Connect Bass PODXT Live to your MIDI equipment to select Channel Memories (via Program Change messages), or automate Bass PODXT Live settings (via controllers and/or SySex).
Phones - When you want to listen with headphones, plug them in here. Bass PODXT Live automatically switches to Studio Mode whenever headphones are connected.
Output To Amp/Line - The unbalanced 1/4-inch connectors here get Bass PODXT Live feeding into the front of a bass amp, otherwise, choose LINE. The rear panel LEVEL knob sets the output level. Changing the OUTPUT level does not change your tone, so you can get the tone you want at any volume level.
The MODEL connector gives you the fully processed Amp+Cab+Effects+Mic signal generated by Bass PODXT Live. The D.I. connector gives you an unprocessed time- and phase-aligned version of your signal.
Aux Input - Connect a CD player, MP3 player, drum machine, virtual accordion, or other device here, and you’ll hear it at Bass PODXT Live's headphone and Amp/Line outputs. Very handy for jamming along!
Input - Your bass goes here. Set the switch to norm for use with most passive pickup instruments. If you have to put two 9-volt batteries in your bass to make it rock, flip the switch to pad to prevent overdriving Bass PODXT Live’s input in an unpleasant-sounding way.
Pedal 2 - You can add even more real-time control by connecting a standard expression pedal, such as the Line 6 EX-1. You’ll be able to control Wah, Volume, and Tweak functions all at the same time!
On Stage
When you’re playing on stage with Bass POD® XT Live, you’ve got a choice of setups. Bass PODXT Live can be in between your bass and a bass amplifier so Bass PODXT Live acts as a tone-shaping front end for the amp. You can also plug straight out of Bass PODXT Live’s outputs into the house system for awesome amp and effect tone without the hassle of mics and cabinets.
Or you can choose to run Bass PODXT Live into a power amp and speaker cabinets, using it as the ultimate preamp. Whichever setup you choose, all you have to do is dial it up the right setting in Bass PODXT Live.
What are you connecting to?

STUDIO DIRECT - When plugging Bass PODXT Live straight into a P.A., or using in-ear monitoring systems, select STUDIO DIRECT for amazing amp and effect tone, night after night. Line 6’s exclusive A.I.R. II processing serves up a virtual speaker-cabinet-air-microphone experience so good you may never use a regular bass amplifier and microphone on stage again. You’re as powerful as the entire P.A. — and guaranteed to be in the mix!
LIVE W HORN, LIVE W H EQ, LIVE NO HORN, LIVE NO H EQ - Choose one of these settings when plugging into a combo amp, head and bass cabinets, or power amp and bass cabinets. Choose LIVE NO HORN or LIVE NO H EQ if your system doesn’t have a horn or high frequency driver, or you’ve chosen to turn them off on your speaker cabinet. Choose the LIVE W HORN or LIVE W H EQ option if your system includes a horn or other high frequency driver. The Mic component of A.I.R. is turned off, and the Cabinet Models are revoiced to sound their best coming through the kind of setup you choose. The two "with EQ" modes also give you Tone Correction controls.
What is Tone Correction?

The idea of these Tone Correction controls is to adjust Bass PODXT Live’s overall sound to compensate for the tonal response of the preamp section of the amp that you’re plugging into. We’ve found that it is often necessary to reduce the low frequency or high frequency parts of the Bass PODXT Live to get decent results in this sort of a configuration, or shift the focus of the mid frequencies, so that’s what these controls are set to do.
Bi-Amp Mode - Bass PODXT Live includes a Bi-Amp Mode. Bi-Amping is the technique of using a crossover to split a signal into its higher frequency and lower frequency portions, and sending each frequency range to a different amplification system. Lows would typically be sent to a power amp setup with lots of wattage and large diameter speakers, while highs would be sent to smaller diameter speakers and/or horns. Bass PODXT Live’s Bi-Amp Mode includes selectable slope and frequency.

I really enjoy the amp models and most of the effects. Really easy to use and program. The synth modes I can live without, though. I just can't see myself using them. I made myself two different presets for everyday/gig use. I've been playing bass for about 23 years now, and I don't think I've had this much fun with an effects pedal board since I started.

Pros: Good tone quality, low noise, many amps in one, versital, recording
Cons: Very Low output signal,

I have owned a BNX3, and many effects pedals. I worked in a music store for a few years and ran it for a couple.

Also I have owned (or used more than 10 times) the following equipment.
Ampeg SVP PRO,
Ameg SVT4 PRO
Eden navigator
Eden 550
Genz benz 1200
Genz benz 210 combo
Fender 115
peavey TNT 115
Harkey 3500 head
ampeg SVT CL
Avalon U5
SWR grand prix
MESA 400+

In a live situation or recording with other instruments you can get the sound of any of the amps I have played. Plus you can add effects and stomp boxes. If you are playing alone and unfamiliar with the POD XT LIVE you may think it sounds funny for one reason or another. After some time with it you can figure out how it is working with your rig and set it correctly. I have to turn the tweeter adn mid speaker down on my Acme 210 cabs with the line 6 where I have them full on with other preamps/amps.

For around $300 this is much better than carrying an old $1200 ampeg tube amp for dirt, and another $1200 amp for clean, and then $500 in pedals.

I would recommend this to anyone who plays more than one style of music.

Its output is very low, and the volume pedal minimum function does not operate well. I can not get a full volume out of my QSC and in comparison the output of my bass alone is louder than its highest output.

I only use 3 amps... however I have different presets for different songs with effects/timed delays to fit each song while keeping the same amp tone.

Ins and Outs
POD® is equipped to handle today’s guitar recording needs with +4dBu balanced or -10dBV unbalanced 1/4" connectors. MIDI lets you automate every move and our optional FBV™ generation foot controllers let you do it all with your feet. POD 2.0 also comes with a high-power headphone output for silent jamming.
  • Input - Plug your guitar in here.
  • Phones - Plug in your headphones here for silent practicing.
  • Left & Right Output - These are balanced 1/4" TRS connectors, and ready to rock with pro +4 dBu balanced equipment. They will also work happily with unbalanced -10 dBV equipment and standard guitar cables.
  • A.I.R.™ Mode – If you want to plug POD into a guitar amp as "front end," flip the A.I.R. Mode switch to AMP, and set your amp for a clean tone. This defeats the speaker-microphone-room tone simulation of the A.I.R. processing. If you’re using POD in almost any other setup (plugging direct into a mixer, recorder, PA, power amplifier, etc.) you want the DIRECT position on the A.I.R. switch.
  • Foot Pedal Connector - POD® 2.0 is now compatible with the entire line of current foot controllers including FBV Express™ and FBV Shortboard™!
  • MIDI In & Out - Connect POD to your MIDI equipment to select channel memories or automate POD settings.

A new standard in direct guitar recording, POD is the ultimate guitar direct recording/performance tool with acclaimed Line 6 modeling and built-in stereo effects. Line 6's revolutionary A.I.R. Modeling accurately captures the tone and feel of speaker cabinets, microphones, and studio room characteristics for an amazing recorded sound on everything from the most prestigious pro studio setup to a multi-track cassette. Sounds like having a great amp mic'd by a great engineer in a great studio. The ultimate guitar Direct Recording tool with acclaimed Line 6 Modeling and built-in Stereo Effects. This baby can also be used as a Tone-shaping front end for any Guitar Amp, Live PA, or with Headphones.

I've been playing guitar for 15 years now, and I've had a few different amps and heaps of stomp boxes over the years. Nothing will ever replace a real amp, or analogue stomp boxes, and I'm not claiming this little gadget will. So here's my situation and my impression of the Line 6 Pod 2.0:

I live in an apartment. My amps are long since gone (needed the money, so I sold them) but I really wanted something to plug into. Buying an amp really wasn't an option, unless I also wanted to find a new place to stay. I worked at Guitar Center years back and I remembered toying with these during the down time. So I picked one up a few months ago. I've been running it through my stereo system, and for what I do with it, I really can't complain.

The various amp models are all decent. You're not going to get a true Boogie or Marshall stack sound out of this. It does well enough so you can tell what it's emulating, but that's it. The special effects are nice. Simple to use and very functional. I really like all the knobs it has on it, as it allows you to sculpt your tone.

You'll hear some people complain about this. "It sounds sterile" or "That's not what a Vox sounds like..." Well, they're not wrong, but anyone looking for a pure sound out of a $200 digital device can't be that bright. The Pod gets the idea across, and it does a good job doing so.

I recommend the Line 6 Pod if:
*You live in an apartment and you can't have a real amp without getting evicted
*You live with other people and jam it out at night or when other people need quiet
*You're trying to record music and you want a variety of amp sounds and don't have a lot of money
*You enjoy like gadgets with lots of knobs and tons of different sounds to experiment with.

This is one modeler which really does kick I have tried a number of these so called modelers and the Line 6 POD certainly does come at the top.I have used this mostly for home use and have not yet taken it out to gigs but shortly this is going to happen.
The unit is dead handy as it does not need an amplifier to work it i have this running through a HIFI as it is usually needed to practice new material and sits there in a convenient space on the desk.
The manual that comes with it explains all the different types of amps that it can emulate even the very expensive Messa Boogie amp is in here so to get that perfect Santana sound its here baby! Also on this unit you have a direct Amp A.I.R Mode so you can see what the requiredsound is like for an open or closed backed amp.
The manual that comes with it is very thick i thought there could never be that much to read about this unit and you will find it is in different languages hence the size of it.
Be very wary of one important aspect of this unit. Although there is some information concerning this unit and the aspect i will mention shortly it is not very well placed and the novice could end up with a unit which is totally useless.
The aspect deals with the Pedal Board that can be connected to the POD 2.0.
You must be aware that if you have the old Floorboard or FB4.
The Floorboard which came out with the original POD will not work on the POD 2.0. The POD 2.0 has an FBV Pedal labled connection where the older version had pedal connection instead.I don't favour the Ethernet connection either as this to some might be tricky to plug or unplug although once the plug is in it cannot be easily pulled out unless the lug has snapped off the ethernet plug itself. I have no gripes with this unit and would recommend it to anyone however be aware of the type of pedal which can be connected to it as this could be a costly mistake.

I've owned a Line 6 POD 2.0 for a couple of years now. I was looking for something a little more robust than my Digitech Genesis 1. The POD came highly recommended, was not inexpensive, and so I figured the unit must be good. That evening when I plugged it in, I was anticipating an experience somewhat similar to what I'd had using other similar devices by Digitech, Boss, & Zoom. What I experienced was several hours of disillusionment and frustration. The device is real easy to plug in and get sound out of, the same as the other devices I'd used. The problem was the sound I got out of the POD 2.0. It did not sound good. The sonic deficiency is difficult qualify, but essentially, the unit sounds flat & unconvincing. Similar to the effect you get if you wire speakers or guitar pickups out of phase: the sound you get is constantly trying to cancel itself out with only partial success. You get a hollow sound, and with speakers, you lose most of the definition, including the ability to isolate where the sound is coming from. With the POD 2.0, I knew where the sound was coming from and I didn't like it. I chalked up my experience to user error. Surely the problem lay with me. I figured the unit is SO capable, that its complex, and since its new to me, I just didn't know how to tweak it into acceptable auditory form. As loathe as it was, I broke out the manual. I lined up all the shortcut hint-cards that came with the unit, logged onto the Web, and sat down to learn how to properly use the device. I spent days reviewing every line in the manual. I read between the lines just in case there was some piece of universal knowledge that somehow wasn't bestowed upon me. I read forums, and opinions, and lots of other stuff. I input custom patches created by others. I tried different guitars, cables, audio amplifiers, speakers, and had other musically-trained ears listen to the output from the POD. The inescapable conclusion was that the sound the POD 2.0 produces is crud. The unit is very solidly constructed. It comes with quite a manual (though it does take more space on its pages bragging about how wonderful it is than I would like to see in a manual). The switches and knobs and buttons and lights all work very well. It sports a gorgeous paint job. It just doesn't perform its primary duty adequately.

At the risk of sounding like I just hate Line 6, I'll add that the interface ergonomics of the unit, i.e. the way the controls function, the guides painted for the various options, is counter-intuitive. Sure, after memorizing the manual the device is easy enough to use, but what rock-n-roller has the time (or inclination) to read the manual? The other devices I have, Digitech Genesis 1, several Zoom multi-effect boxes, Boss & Ibanez effect boxes, Rockman II, and on and on, can all be operated without reading the manual, simply by utilizing the minimum of instruction silk-screened on their cases. The Digitech is dead simple. It has a knob, it tells you what the knob does, and has a description painted on the case for each possible setting. Not the POD.

Both of these issues are inexcusable. For a company as full of themselves as Line 6 is (as evidenced by the boasting going on in the manual), you'd think they'd actually pay attention to the basics and produce something with a modicum of usefulness.

I didn't return the unit, though I wish I had. Even after all those days reading and experimenting with the POD, I still figured it was me. So I kept at it off and on for several more months without even achieving sound as good as I got from my Zoom (straight out of the box with no adjustment). With the popularity of Line 6's guitars and modeling amplifiers, I've tried episodically to figure out where I'm going wrong configuring the POD 2.0. I've come to realize where I went wrong was in purchasing the device.

This thing is great for practicing with head phones. The wide variety of sounds make for a more authentic practice session (so when you're playing U2 songs, you don't sound like ACDC and vice versa) and makes practicing more fun.

The only big downside is that it sucks down power like nobody's business. I bought four high-end AAA batteries and the Pod ate them in a about a week of playing for less than 2 hours a night. Furthermore, the manual states that only non-rechargeable batteries (or the optional AC adapter) should be used. I now plan to buy the Line 6 DC1, which is line 6's 9 volt adapter, from Amazon soon.

Another, much smaller downside is that the real manual is only available in PDF format from Line 6's web site. But if you're at Amazon, you probably have an internet connection.

While getting the manual, you should probably also download Vyzex, which is Line 6's software for editing the tones from the Pocket Pod. This software isn't absolutely necessary for using the Pocket pod, but it does make editing tones somewhat easier, and it also allows the use of download tones (which work somewhat like synthesizer patches.) I also think the software could be better designed.

Still, I'm very pleased with the product. When you consider it's cost versus the cost of an amp head, plus stomp boxes, etc., the variety of amps and effects modeled, and the fact that the Pocket Pod doesn't take up much space at all, it's a great deal, especially someone like me who practices in an apartment.

Having owned other Line6 hardware and having good experiences with this I bought this device to take to work and jam at on my lunch break. I regret this decision....

First, the good things. It sounds pretty decent if you like to play rock or metal. Its not great, but for jamming along with your mp3 player and practicing it works perfect. There are a ton of different sounds you can coax out of this device. Other people have complained about the interface but I don't have any troubles with it. There are some features you can't manipulate unless you plug it into a computer and use their software, doesn't bother me though. Its portable and runs on batteries. All you need is your guitar, cable, and headphones. Back-lit screen is nice and legible.

The bad: The modulation effects are pretty cheesy and digital sounding. Eats batteries very quickly Clean sounds are just meh, but if you aren't using it for recording it should be fine.

Here my main beef: The build quality of this device is not up to normal Line6 standards. It is very flimsy cheapo plastic. I'm still wondering where the real Line6 device is because this seems like a crappy cheap Chinese copy of a Line6 device. I dropped mine onto indoor carpeting and the screen cracked, making it unusable. Line6 considers this device to be consumable and will not help you fix it. They tell you to use their authorized service center to repair...ok, I contact every single one on the list and they all tell me the same thing, deal with Line6 directly. So I try, and Line6 tells you to use an authorized service center... I don't like being treated like this and playing these games. I broke it an am willing to pay for a repair but they just want me to buy a new one. Heck, sell me a new screen and I will solder it in myself (I work in electronics). No go. Digitech never treated me this way with any of their products, in warranty or not.

If you buy this be extremely careful with it. I'm not joking, this thing is flimsy. Its not high impact plastic... its thin and fragile. If you have an issue, good luck dealing with Line6. In this economy you'd think they would do whatever it takes to maintain customers but I guess thats not the case. Their business model must make them immune to these things.

I wanted to like this thing, I really did. My old POD 2.0 is great and sturdy. This pocket thing is an example of a great concept implemented very poorly.

Buy Line 6 Pocket POD NOW Cheap Instantly!

Line6 is a company that revolutionized professional grade studio guitar processing in the late 1990's with the original POD... Studio musicians from New York to Nashville began praising this little red box they could carry around in their backpack and into the studio instead of the usual crate of amps... Yes, the POD sounded THAT good. Since it's introduction, Line6 has revised the POD every few years to improve features, the Pocket POD technology (processing chips) are identical to the POD 2.0, the sound you get is the same grade... the only difference is the size of the unit and the Pocket POD is missing some of the more high-end input/outputs (MIDI, foot switch control, etc...) other than that, the Pocket POD is a second generation POD with a budget price tag. So here you get professional studio grade amp simulation and effects for under $150 and you can carry this around in your pocket.

Now putting the core technology (which is very good) aside and getting into features. The Pocket POD comes with an excellent set of presets. You can select by BAND, STYLE or USER. As I mentioned, the POD is used by professional musicians, BAND presets are presets created with direct input from the pros. Want to dial up Hoobastanks guitarist sound on The Reason? It's already programmed for you along with about a dozen others artist presets created by the artist themselves.

There are many more STYLE presets, style presets are approximation of specific artist recorded tone on specific songs, they have names easy to reconize like: CRAZY TRAIN, JUMP, FREE FALLIN, DUST WIND, SANDMAN, ANOTHER BRICK, WHOLE LOTTA LOVE etc.. Most of them sound fantastic.

Just dial up a specific tone patch then use one of the four silver knobs to adjust: Gain, Effect Level, Delay Level and Volume. There are so many of these presets many guitarist will probably never even bother to "deep edit", but for those who want more, Line6 has a free program that you can download for MacOS X and Windows that allows you to build your own presets and store them in the Pocket POD. The Pocket POD connects to a PC through an included USB cable and then the user can select a specific amp head, amp cabinet, add effects, etc... You can build your own virtual guitar rig and then store it in one of the included user preset spots.

CONNS:
The "deep edit" software I mentioned above does not work on many notebook PCS and will not work through USB hubs. This will leave many users wanting more frustrated. Also, no power supply is included and the battery life here isn't good. User manual is essentially 3 pages printed in many languages, no manual for the software (and how hard would it have been to include it on a CD-ROM in the box?)

Manufacturer's Description for Line 6 DL4 Delay Modeler Pedal

The Line 6 DL4 Delay Modeler offers you an incredible array of sounds, from a tube driven, tape loop echo (complete with adjustable wow and flutter), through 24-bit squeaky clean digital echo, to real-time reverse delay. Not only that, but the Line 6 DL4 gives you complete programmable control over all aspects of the sound in the studio and on the stage. Incredibly simple to use, the Line 6 DL4 is an amazingly powerful tool offering you delay effects never before available in a single box.

The Line 6 DL4 and Flexible Digital Modeling

The Line 6 DL4 offers digital modeling based on 15 of those vintage delay and echo effects you've always yearned for. The DL4 includes EP-1 Tube Echoplex, EP-3 solidstate Echoplex, Space Echo, Deluxe Memory Man, Reverse delay, Rhythmic delay, Dynamic delay, and many more.

The Loop Sampler on the Line 6 DL4 includes 14 seconds of memory + 800ms of Pre-delay (sort of a delay within a delay), and features half speed and/or reverse overdubbing, and more.

The Line 6 DL4 is Flexible and Rugged

The Line 6 DL4 packs models of those sounds and many more into a rugged, road-tested steel housing that can run for up to 30 hours on four "C" batteries or with the optional PX-2G power adaptor. Models of classic delay boxes—and the sweet choruses and vibratos that accompany many of them—are just the beginning; the Line 6 DL4 also boasts innovative sounds like its "Auto-Volume Echo," which combines a volume swell with a tweakable tape-style echo; or the outstanding "Reverse Delay," which allows you to play stunning backwards guitar solos on the fly.

With the Line 6 DL4, you also get those U2-style "Rhythmic Delays" in several metric flavors, super-cool "Ping-Pong Delay" effects, and outrageous stereo panned repeats. Look, if it ain’t in the DL4, it probably doesn’t exist...until you create it. What's more, with its onboard 14-second looper, the Line 6 DL4 is both the perfect practice tool and the ultimate creative canvas for crafting overdubs and creating textures, with its 1/2 speed and reverse modes ideal for sonic adventurers and arrangement-minded recordists alike.

The Line 6 DL4: Easy to Use

Like all Line 6 stompbox modelers, the DL4 boasts a simple and sturdy front panel design, with four footswitches for saving and recalling your sounds, and six knobs for selecting models and tweaking parameters, with distinct assignments for each knob depending on the delay model you’ve chosen. Paired with the optional EX-1 expression pedal, which lets you morph between two radically different settings for each of your sounds, the Line 6 DL4 is truly the ultimate delay pedal, making the history of echo and delay available to your creative future.

Line 6 DL4 Features:

- 3 programmable presets and onboard Tap Tempo.
- True Bypass switching, so your direct tone is exactly that; direct from your guitar to your amp.
- Expression Pedal Input - for real-time control of all effect settings.
- DL4 runs in discrete stereo, both inputs and outputs, so Left stays left and Right stays right. (Loop Sampler sums signal to mono.)
- Runs from batteries (a set is included) or optional power adapter.

When you have a DL4, the idea of having a delay pedal that does one kind of effect seems just silly. If you want to use delay, you want this pedal. It has the standard digital and (modeled) analog delays, but also has unique delays like reverse, ping-pong, delayed swell, rotary horn, etc, plus the loop sampler, which is its most famous feature. Now let me say this . . . if you are after a loop station first and foremost, don't get this--look into one of Boss's stations; but the fact that a loop sampler is included among a long list of other great functions is a great selling point. I play through an multi-effects unit that includes most of the delay options in this pedal, but I use this primarily since its usability is so great.

The Line 6 DL4 Delay Modeler, which debuted in 1999, has been a mainstay in my effects lineup since I bought it, which was in 2003. This pedal sounds beautiful.

I'm not going to get too much into what this pedal can do other than say it will satisfy all of your delay needs. All of the 16 delay settings sound super clean and they should since it's pure 24-bit.

Despite high praise of this product, it still retails for the same price: which is $249. I think this price is way too high considering it has been out for almost 10 years. I bought mine for $235.

What is also great about the DL4 is it can be used as a means to setup a two amplifier/stereo setting, which is one of the best things you can do for your sound I think.

When my pedal dies or if it ever does (my fingers are crossed right now), I'm going to be replacing it, because I can't live without it. I have been playing the guitar for 18 years, so I have many years of experience with effects pedals.

I knew this pedal was the one for me when I walked into a Guitar Center with hopes to try it out and see how I liked it. The salesman hooked me up and showed me a few things about it, which I still can't remember, and he finally talked about the looping function and this was my initial introduction to looping. I played a short melodic chord progression and then I overdubbed and stacked more chords on top of this progression and BAM! There it was, the sound I was looking for my entire life!

This experience has been a revelation to me and has sent me on many sonic adventures. If you do not own it, go down to your local guitar store and try it out and experience the sounds that have made the DL4 a classic.

I think the price is off too, but they don't have much choice. The 4-button stomps are $250.I have the M13 and I just updated the firmware to version 2.0 today. This is a new firmware that was released along with the announcement of the M9 and it includes quite a few new things. The overdrives and distortions are also much smoother now with the new firmware. Sadly, I kind of want to sell my M13 and get the M9. I love the piece of gear, but I'm trying to strip down what I play through. I rarely use more than 3 effects in the M13 at once, so the M9 seems like a good option. I'd also love the ditch my huge pedalboard... fitting the M13, expression pedal, and 3 homemade boxes requires quite a bit of space!"

If you can only buy one pedal, buy this one. I'm almost afraid to let my musician friends know I have for fear of theft! Gear I play with: Jackson DK2 w/ Cool Rails (n), Vintage Rails (m), and stock humbucker (b); Fender 212r Amp. I've been playing for about twelve years off an on. Alt. Rock, Metal, Jazz, Oldies, whatever...

True bypass really is true bypass, but honestly I can't tell a difference between that and the DSP. Display is big and bright... easy to see the accurate tuner even in dim light.

I've heard some complaints about the distortion, but I think the various tones sound great, especially with a well balanced amp or an equalizer set to your choice to get the mids just right. Delays, Looper, Verbs, etc. are all outstanding. I particularly like running the Heavy Distortion w/ a Digital Delay and an Analog Tri-Chorus. Vetta Juice also sounds fantastic with the '63 Spring verb. Very solid construction and the jacks really click firmly when you put your cables in. My only complaint is they aren't cheap enough to buy for all my friends! Seriously, I cannot rant or rave about this enough... so freaking great!

i am playing with it since a couple of weeks now, and i am enjoying it really a lot.
the sound quality is great, and programming it is very intuitive.
it has only one tiny drawback: the pedalboard is small, so the buttons are too close to each other.
anyway, i can't imagine anything better for this price!

Line Six Amps (Line 6 Amplifiers) - Review of 15 Line 6 Spider Amps

Line 6 Spider Amplifiers - Reviews of Amplifiers by Line 6

Amplifiers by Line 6
Line 6 is pretty cool isn't it? The best amps in the industry, in my opinion.

Line 6 produces a number of guitar amplifiers (combos and heads), all featuring amplifier modeling software.

The Spider III sold over 92,000 units in 2008, the 15-watt Spider III amp was the best-selling guitar amplifier in America.

Here are amps by Line 6 - along with some specs and reviews.

1. Line 6 Spider IV 15

Spider IV 15 delivers a perfectly distilled collection of celebrated American and British amp tones.

The Line 6 Spider IV 15 boasts a diverse range of sounds including sparkling clean tones, warm jazz tones, syrupy drive tones, high-gain distortions, and more based on immortal vintage beauties and modern monsters. 6 stunning effects (2 simultaneously), including lush reverb, expressive tremolo, tangy chorus/flange, and more add color and depth to your sound. Built-in tuner, headphone out, CD/MP3 input, and 4 user-created presets for instant recall of tones. 8" custom speaker and 3/4-closed-back cabinet provide a tight, punchy response.

Features: The amp was made in 2009. The amp sounds great at clean and crunch and it also has two other modes based on Mesa/Boogie® Dual Rectifier® sound they are "Metal" and "Insane". Clean sounds simply awesome, Crunch is great, perfect for playing AC/DC, it's so great because it based on 68 Marshall® Plexi 100. Metal is based on Mesa/Boogie® Dual Rectifier® and it sounds great for Metal solos and most heavy songs like Metallica greatest Master of Puppets etc. Insane sounds like the heaviest sh** there is on earth it's based on Mesa/Boogie® Dual Rectifier® ( RED CHANNEL )This skull crushing sound is great for tapping solos like "One" solo. But apart from that it's just a hell load of distortion good for absolute bone crushing sound and fun to play with a tremolo bar, make some wild noises. Effects are good not great but they aren't bad for 100 amp. You can choose between "Chorus Flange", "Phaser" and "Tremolo" plus to this you can add the following echo effects; "Sweep Echo", "Tape Echo" and "Reverb". From those effects I mostly use Reverb but sometimes I like to play with the tremolo effects for songs like Boulevard of Broken Dreams (Green Day). So basically it has 4 Channels 3 + 3 different effects and a Drive, Bass, Mid, Treble, Channel Vol. And a Master knob. It also comes with an FBV Pedal, CD/MP3, Phones / Record outputs.

This amp was made in 2009, it's solid state, 15watts and it has a 8 inch line6 custom design speaker. On the front pannel it has four channel. Clean, crunch, metal and insane, with seven knobs for each one: drive, the EQ (bass, mids, treble), a channel volume, two effect knobs and a master volume knob. The effects are separated as it follows: the first one has chorus flange, phaser and tremolo and the second has sweep echo, tape echo and reverb. You've got your guitar input, a headphones jack, an auxiliary input and a fbv pedal input. This amp can suit allmost all music genres, for home practicing (I use it for that so it's allright). For me it's fine, because I play mostly metal and hard rock, with bits of blues and Dire Straits, so I find myself using allmost everything, specially the clean and metal channels. I wished it had a channel switching pedal but for the price this amp has got many things. It also has some good features, like saving your own presets, a noise gate and a boost for the distortion, to have even more if you like it. At first it looks very good, but it's not.

Sound: All four channels are doing a great job providing me with any sound I want. I use with two double and one single coil, pickups. It's a great amp for an experienced jazz or blues guitarist and also for a small rocker who likes to play heavy, for me it's perfect. It can makes sounds from smooth clean calm sound to absolute skull crushing sound simply Insane. Distortion sounds good on all channels and it could be quiet and it could be really loud.

I'm currently using an Ibanez rg350dx, white with a white pickguard (beautiful) with no pedals at the moment. Like I said I play metal mostly, but this amp doesn't have a good distortion for it. The metal channel sounds aceptable, but muddy at high distortion levels and the insane it's unplayable because you can't hear the notes you played with distortion at ten o'clock only. Plus it's really noisy. The crunch channel it's not bad but it could improve a lot at low distortion levels because I wanted a classic rock sound but it can't do it. The clean channel, on the other hand, it's really good, because it sounds defined, and at high volumes it distorts only a little bit. This is the best thing about the amp probably. The effects are good also, especially the chorus flange, but the phaser and the tape echo are also of my liking. The reverb, the sweep echo, and the tremolo are just pasable, because they don't have the sound I'm looking for. It's a pity Line 6 doesn't make good amps.

Reliability & Durability: I trust this amp very much and advise you to get one is well. Since I got it I haven't got any problems with it. It looks great and well build although it's build in China it's very good quality. I am sure I would use this amp as a backup but not 15V, at least 75V. Really good quality for the price.

I've owned it for three months and at the moment it has only given my one problem. While I was testing it at high volumes it started doing strange noise, specially on the metal channel, but it doesn't bother me, as I use it for my bedroom. Other than that it's perfect and looks sturdy, which is good, as I will sell it soon. Obviously you can't use it to gig as it's 15 watts.

FAQ - How to get blues sound out of it?
Answer: Try the crunch channel and don´t use to much gain and it should get you somewhere.
I used to have a Spider 3 15 watt but i never liked it, even as a practise amp.
If you´re serious about playing blues save up money for a tube amp.
Also if you learn how to use the controlls on your guitar and some right hand technique you can play with a clean sound on the "insane" channel. The Insane channel is crazy. Nice for palm muted runs.
