Most of the guitarists I know own a Line 6 POD, a little device that looks like a large red lima bean with knobs and buttons on the top. When I first heard of the Line 6 Bass POD Pro, I was curious, as my guitarist friends considered their guitar POD to be indispensable.
I had the opportunity to try one of these out, and right away I knew I wanted to buy one, and soon did. One of the first things you can do is play with the various effects it gives you, like having a bunch of foot pedals linked together. For live sound, you can use its various built-in effects or simulate a cabinet and feed your signal directly to the PA, but I normally just run through my bass cabinet for shows, because for smaller shows, the PA might not have enough low end, and your signal is blended with the rest of the band, so the shaping of sound the POD can do is largely lost when it gets mixed in with everything else the PA is doing. Besides, it looks weird to not have an amp and speaker cabinet near the bass player.
Where this unit really shines, however, is in the recording studio. Many bands will go into the studio, set the drummer up in a large room with lots of mics, and get good drum tracks laid down, while the guitarists, keyboardists, vocalists, bassist, and so forth sit in the control room and play along on "scratch" tracks. The band then goes back and re-dubs the other instruments onto real tracks, one instrument at a time.
Ordinarily, you'd either plug the bass directly into the input on the mixing board, or, less commonly, set up your bass amp in a recording room and mic it, and feed that signal into the mixing board. Most bands spend a lot of time getting a good sound out of what comes out of the mixing board, by tweaking the mic, tweaking the EQ on the input channel, and so forth.
With the POD, you can plug your bass into the mixing board, set the EQ flat, and record your track. Then, when you go to mix down, you can run your bass track through the POD and make it sound like you're using any one of a ton of amp/cabinet combinations. This lets you experiment - "what would it sound like through a 4x10 cab instead of a 1x15?", "how would it sound if I used a tube head instead of solid state for the bass solo?" and so forth - things you could only do by setting up another set of real equipment and re-recording the track if you didn't have the POD.
You can also apply various effects, such as reverb, flanger, distortion, etc. If you're using a recording environment that lets you apply a filter to a track by running through a piece of external equipment (such as how they often add reverb to vocal tracks), then the POD gives you virtually unlimited control over how your bass track sounds in the finish product.
I rate this 4 of 5 stars for a few reasons. First, the S/PDIF sound quality leaves a little to be desired. There's no sense having such killer effects and emulations, then muddying them with a less than perfect A/D converter. I'd use an external A/D if you want a digital signal.
Second, the unit is not very deep. This makes it impossible to stack anything on top of it, and if it is mounted in a rack, it makes it so you have to use a flashlight and reach into the depths of your rack case to plug wires into the back. It's nice that they can package it so tightly, but they could easily just extend the chassis back a bit to make the jacks easier to access.
Overall, this is a solid piece of equipment, both in terms of features and reliability.

What are you connecting to?
STUDIO DIRECT - When plugging Bass PODXT Live straight into a P.A., or using in-ear monitoring systems, select STUDIO DIRECT for amazing amp and effect tone, night after night. Line 6’s exclusive A.I.R. II processing serves up a virtual speaker-cabinet-air-microphone experience so good you may never use a regular bass amplifier and microphone on stage again. You’re as powerful as the entire P.A. — and guaranteed to be in the mix!
LIVE W HORN, LIVE W H EQ, LIVE NO HORN, LIVE NO H EQ - Choose one of these settings when plugging into a combo amp, head and bass cabinets, or power amp and bass cabinets. Choose LIVE NO HORN or LIVE NO H EQ if your system doesn’t have a horn or high frequency driver, or you’ve chosen to turn them off on your speaker cabinet. Choose the LIVE W HORN or LIVE W H EQ option if your system includes a horn or other high frequency driver. The Mic component of A.I.R. is turned off, and the Cabinet Models are revoiced to sound their best coming through the kind of setup you choose. The two "with EQ" modes also give you Tone Correction controls.
What is Tone Correction?
The idea of these Tone Correction controls is to adjust Bass PODXT Live’s overall sound to compensate for the tonal response of the preamp section of the amp that you’re plugging into. We’ve found that it is often necessary to reduce the low frequency or high frequency parts of the Bass PODXT Live to get decent results in this sort of a configuration, or shift the focus of the mid frequencies, so that’s what these controls are set to do.
Bi-Amp Mode - Bass PODXT Live includes a Bi-Amp Mode. Bi-Amping is the technique of using a crossover to split a signal into its higher frequency and lower frequency portions, and sending each frequency range to a different amplification system. Lows would typically be sent to a power amp setup with lots of wattage and large diameter speakers, while highs would be sent to smaller diameter speakers and/or horns. Bass PODXT Live’s Bi-Amp Mode includes selectable slope and frequency.

When you’re playing on stage with Bass POD® XT Live, you’ve got a choice of setups. Bass PODXT Live can be in between your bass and a bass amplifier so Bass PODXT Live acts as a tone-shaping front end for the amp. You can also plug straight out of Bass PODXT Live’s outputs into the house system for awesome amp and effect tone without the hassle of mics and cabinets.

STUDIO DIRECT - When plugging Bass PODXT Live straight into a P.A., or using in-ear monitoring systems, select STUDIO DIRECT for amazing amp and effect tone, night after night. Line 6’s exclusive A.I.R. II processing serves up a virtual speaker-cabinet-air-microphone experience so good you may never use a regular bass amplifier and microphone on stage again. You’re as powerful as the entire P.A. — and guaranteed to be in the mix!
LIVE W HORN, LIVE W H EQ, LIVE NO HORN, LIVE NO H EQ - Choose one of these settings when plugging into a combo amp, head and bass cabinets, or power amp and bass cabinets. Choose LIVE NO HORN or LIVE NO H EQ if your system doesn’t have a horn or high frequency driver, or you’ve chosen to turn them off on your speaker cabinet. Choose the LIVE W HORN or LIVE W H EQ option if your system includes a horn or other high frequency driver. The Mic component of A.I.R. is turned off, and the Cabinet Models are revoiced to sound their best coming through the kind of setup you choose. The two "with EQ" modes also give you Tone Correction controls.
What is Tone Correction?
The idea of these Tone Correction controls is to adjust Bass PODXT Live’s overall sound to compensate for the tonal response of the preamp section of the amp that you’re plugging into. We’ve found that it is often necessary to reduce the low frequency or high frequency parts of the Bass PODXT Live to get decent results in this sort of a configuration, or shift the focus of the mid frequencies, so that’s what these controls are set to do.
Bi-Amp Mode - Bass PODXT Live includes a Bi-Amp Mode. Bi-Amping is the technique of using a crossover to split a signal into its higher frequency and lower frequency portions, and sending each frequency range to a different amplification system. Lows would typically be sent to a power amp setup with lots of wattage and large diameter speakers, while highs would be sent to smaller diameter speakers and/or horns. Bass PODXT Live’s Bi-Amp Mode includes selectable slope and frequency.

| I have owned a BNX3, and many effects pedals. I worked in a music store for a few years and ran it for a couple. Also I have owned (or used more than 10 times) the following equipment. Ampeg SVP PRO, Ameg SVT4 PRO Eden navigator Eden 550 Genz benz 1200 Genz benz 210 combo Fender 115 peavey TNT 115 Harkey 3500 head ampeg SVT CL Avalon U5 SWR grand prix MESA 400+ In a live situation or recording with other instruments you can get the sound of any of the amps I have played. Plus you can add effects and stomp boxes. If you are playing alone and unfamiliar with the POD XT LIVE you may think it sounds funny for one reason or another. After some time with it you can figure out how it is working with your rig and set it correctly. I have to turn the tweeter adn mid speaker down on my Acme 210 cabs with the line 6 where I have them full on with other preamps/amps. Buy Line 6 Bass PODxt Live NOW! For around $300 this is much better than carrying an old $1200 ampeg tube amp for dirt, and another $1200 amp for clean, and then $500 in pedals. I would recommend this to anyone who plays more than one style of music. Its output is very low, and the volume pedal minimum function does not operate well. I can not get a full volume out of my QSC and in comparison the output of my bass alone is louder than its highest output. I only use 3 amps... however I have different presets for different songs with effects/timed delays to fit each song while keeping the same amp tone. |
